These lab activities and supplies will inspire my science students to apply what they have learned through reading and lecture to real-world problems and investigations. I believe that students learn best through life experiences, rather than simply reading or hearing about them. Science lends itself to discovery and allowing curiosity to be a driving force. For many of my kids, biology is their favorite class of the day because they get to experiment and do hands-on activities while building their reading and math skills. Lecture to a child about biological concepts and he will remember it for a day; teach and allow the child to experience biology and he will remember biology for life. Studying living plants and animals brings the content to life and aids in student comprehension. Students are more likely to retain and feel passionate about the subject of biology if they have ownership of their lab activities. Being able to apply the content we learn in class and experiment will allow students the opportunity to think critically and problem-solve. I would love for my young scientists to grow their own plants and make their own test crosses and see inheritance patterns in the fast plants. I believe this experience will allow them to better understand their own traits and be a spring board for future discussions around genetic disorders. Furthermore, the critical thinking, problem solving and content knowledge are skills my students will take with them for the rest of their lives.
