My students are at risk 5th grade students. Majority of the students fall below the 40% percentile in reading. They are a bunch of hard working kids who are really frustrated because the achievement gap is so substantial. My students have expressed their frustration through behavior because of the lack of understanding and social economic issues. My school is graded low-performing through the Texas Education Agency. This will be our second year of low-performance. I have a great principal that has a vision of reaching the highest level academically and socially in a safe environment through joint collaboration of staff, parents, and the community. Although, we have made a lot of gains this year, we continue to struggle with comprehension and math. I think with content rich material that promotes fun, students will be motivated to learn. My goal is to bridge the gap from reading below level to on level.
