I am the teacher of 2 kindergarten classes containing 19 students in each. The students at our school begin kindergarten with little or no exposure to books or computers and few, if any, bedtime stories. Sadly some have never even held a pencil, gone to a zoo, or even know where milk comes from. Students live in poverty stricken homes where their entire world experiences consist of going to Walmart. Many students come to school with speech issues, some not even talking until age 4. We also have a large number of non English speaking students. It's hard to begin school with a positive outlook with so many disadvantages.
