I am incorporating a daily 10-minute Mindfulness routine into the start of each class every day. Students enter the art room, sign in, and one student starts the session with a Tibetan singing bowl. With the lights dim and in total silence, a guided meditation follows that focuses on deep breathing and sometimes calming visualization is played on the computer. Students are allowed to sit at their desks or sit, stretch, or lie down on a yoga mat on the linoleum floor. The four pillows I am requesting will give students a more comfortable position on the floor, whether they sit on the pillow which would cushion their sit-bones or just rest their head on it. Pillow covers will be washed weekly. Mindfulness has already had a positive effect on students' moods and is a useful coping tool for them when faced with a challenge or are living in a negative environment. I'm excited to continue to add to their experience in Mindfulness and to continue to make the school a safe, peaceful place to be.
