In an effort to make the classroom environment more functional for all students I wanted to provide alternative seating or standing options. The yoga chairs will allow students to move while working and the standing desks for those who would rather be up. The research on flexible seating and attention span has proven to be beneficial to students when those options for non-traditional seating are made available. Usually middle school students are not given the option for alternative seating, and certainly not in a science class with lab safety to consider. The option of the yoga chair or standing desk will provide my students with an opportunity to learn more with the multi-sensory approach. The yoga chair will allow movement where the static chairs do not. The standing desk will be an option for those needing to stand instead of being in stuck in a seat for another class.
