Developing leisure skills, especially in the form of the creative arts, has proven a great benefit to my students who struggle with academic skills. I teach Kindergarten students in a mixed classroom of typical developing as well as students with learning disabilities. Many of these students come from difficult environments and we find that being creative in the classroom allows these children to learn a variety of skills in a positive and fun way. Some students I teach have Autism, and the creative arts are an outstanding outlet for relieving stress, as emotional regulation is a huge challenge for them. The students in my school are between 70 and 80% low income. They have many "strikes against them," so that is why I feel it is important to nurture them both in the areas of the reading/math areas as well as the social/emotional areas.
