I have learned through my few years of teaching that it is hard for many students to sit in at their desk during the day (I don't even like to do it)! The past few years I have purchased, on my own, various types of flexible seating options including pillows, small carpets, mats, cushions, wobble cushions, exercise balls, and more! These options are great for many students who are unable to keep their attention long enough to complete their work during the school day. This past year I had the opportunity to visit another school system and in one particular classroom there were 2 desks where students were able to stand at while working. I have never seen such a thing but I immediately thought of several of my students whom would benefit from this. Not able to purchase one of these desks on my own and knowing our school district had a very tight budget I asked one of our custodians to raise a desk up as high as it would go.
I was amazed to see so many students wanting to stand at this make shift desk. Many of my students enjoyed the opportunity to use this desk and benefited from it. It would be wonderful to have the "real thing" this year.
