Students have chosen this project and these particular items to enhance the classroom environment. As students took a tour of our school building, they were given opportunities to see flexible seating in action. I decided to challenge them after their interest peaked. What if my passionate fifth-grade scientists are taking STEM to the next level by designing a classroom where they can work creatively and engage with other learners? The students LOVED the challenge, but they need your help to complete our project. The seating in the classroom has been chosen by the students and for the students. They will design the layout of the classroom and create an environment in which they can own their own space. Students chose the stability balls to promote movement while working. They saw other students in our school sitting and bouncing as they work. Bungee chairs made the list because students can collaborate in small groups and yet have their own space when it is time for independent work. Big Joe Chairs allow the students to curl up and work on projects and tasks. For floor seating, these young engineers chose knee cushions to sit on at our low tables. Wobble cushions were chosen to enhance our traditional chairs and give students the ability to move while in a chair. With the creativity and research of the students, I know our class will be able to enjoy collaborating in spaces they designed. Flexible seating gives students to opportunity to move, bounce, sit on the floor, or nestle into a comfy corner.
