The students in my classroom have significant cognitive disabilities. In addition to teaching them academic and social skills, we are also working on building their independence. Work independence is a skill every child needs in order to have autonomy both during school age and into adulthood. By donating to our project, you are providing the materials and tools my exceptional learners need to overcome challenges and create more independence. Our classroom provides multiple opportunities to learn new skills and builds on practicing those skills through independent task work. These skills we create carry over into their home life as well. Additional materials for our classroom reviews skills taught and gives students autonomy. The items selected provide review and practice with basic foundational concepts such as alphabet recognition, sequencing, numeracy and problem solving. Puzzles within the list not only provide problem solving opportunities, but provides opportunities for fine motor skills practice. Each activity and manipulative can be taught through one on one support then as the child progresses, moved into an independent task. Having a disability can be overcome by creating an classroom and home environment that supports and strengthens their independent needs. We are teaching our students and their families ways to support and advocate for their future.
