I am a proud teacher of 22 amazing first grade students. My students are surrounded by a very high needs community but come to our school for the education they need to overcome their economic situation. Our school is trying to close the achievement gap one year at a time. My students come to school every day and leave behind a world of the poverty and crime. Each child's parents have enrolled their children into a school where they know academics and data hold precedent over behavior and low expectations. I teach at a charter school that is extremely data driven and student centered. At my school, students needs come first.
