History has always been a subject which students tend to shy away from. I have found this has a lot to do with the fact, often students cannot relate to the topic. However, once the topic is real for the students, a 'boring' subject becomes meaningful for them. Which is why, I'm asking for help in getting poster paper, markers and pencils for my students. The poster paper and markers go hand in hand in having my 8th graders take part in gallery walk discussions, about the past. During these walks, students are allowed to write their thoughts down and respectfully comment to each other. These materials are the starting point in having students take part in academic discourse within the classroom. It will help facilitate student led discussion about historical topics. Often, just reading their comments to the class leads into powerful classroom discussion, which could not happen if they only read about the topic and didn't have a space to express their own thoughts. Lastly, pencils... every student needs at least one thing to help get them get started in school; often it is as simple as a pencil. I can assure you these pencils will be put to great use. Students will put your donation to use when they are using evidence to write WHY they feel a certain event in history was justifiable or it may cross curriculum and be used to find the radius of circle. Regardless of the subject, these pencils will be put to great use, by my students.
