Students at my school come from many different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. With large class sizes, it's important to provide not only the best instruction, but the best environment possible for student learning. Allow students freedom to choose a basic thing, such as where they will sit, can increase student attention and productivity. In addition, allowing this type of freedom can allow for cultural differences and preferences. Supporting this project will provide flexible seating for my students. The rocker chairs and area rug will allow students to sit closer to the ground while they work on group and individual projects. The chairs also allow for movement which is so important to my sixth graders who are transitioning into a school where they no longer get recess. This will be just one of three areas that are being created in my classroom to allow for choice.
