We love to start library time by singing the story time song at the end of which we sit and listen to a story. In the end, we talk about the story and how it relates to their lives and what we learned from the story. We sing either the fiction or the nonfiction song, the students identifying which song we need to sing based on the book that was read. I often emphasize the emotional/social aspects of the book. Students learn how to empathize with others and gain a sense of security and family, enhancing their academic growth. Imagine sitting on an old stained carpet that is too small to fit everyone one on it. Everyone crowds on because no one wants to be one of the ones not on the rug for storytime... The new carpet will not only help with classroom achievement, it will brighten up a dull library! Our students deserve the best.
