Where does food come from? Many students have never had the opportunity to plant a seed and watch it grow. They have not seen how food can be grown from the ground. Often they do not have the space to do this at home. Since we are teaching health integrated into our science classes, we see an opportunity to teach about nutrition and food choices while growing our garden. We want to build a school garden that gives many students a chance to use it. They will collectively make decisions about their garden. The hope is that it sparks a curiosity that they will be able to take home and continue. We have a high percentage of students learning English as their second language. Hands-on learning increases engagement and understanding. We have a beautiful big space next to our school, and we can't wait to fill it with a garden. This part of the project will help provide tools for digging and planting, as well as a rain barrel and hose to provide water whenever our garden needs it.
