The sudden closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic has left many of my most vulnerable students at home without any access to education. I know that many of my young learners are confused, frustrated, and missing their friends and teachers. For weeks, I have been trying to gather resources for my students and their families so that they can stay connected to their classroom and friends while at home. I have launched a Google Classroom and set up ABC Mouse accounts for all of my students. However, over half of my class is unable to access these resources. Many of my students come from low income households and some are living in temporary housing while they try to find a permanent residence. Additionally, some of my students are living in single parent households of parents who are working from home. As pre-k students, unfortunately they are lowest priority when it comes to sharing devices in the home with older siblings, if there is even a device in the home. Many parents only have access to cellphones, some without internet access. Samsung tablets will not only provide an opportunity for equal education to students who have no other means of learning while at home but it will allow my students to work independently as all of the activities are interactive, read aloud to students, and provide guided instruction. Additionally, a Samsung tablet will allow me to translate materials and instructions into Spanish to support the many Spanish speaking families in my classroom. Please help me provide my students with education and a sense of comfort in these unsettling times by gifting them a Samsung Tablet.
