Having classroom dividers will help to keep out visual distractors that are present in the classroom. Often, students with severe disabilities need extra help staying focused on a task by manipulating the environment to foster success. Taking away un-needed visuals help take away distractions from learning. Adding visuals such as visual timers help to show students exactly how long they must work or how long until a transition between tasks. Often when students have impairments in communicating, having a visual of what to expect when takes away a great deal of stress and allows learning to occur. Some students have sensory or tactile preferences that can affect their learning. Sometimes certain aversions to sensory items can impede learning, but often having enjoyable sensory stimulation can serve as reinforcement for completing tasks. Having sensory balls to work for is extremely motivating for many students. It can also help to calm the students when they reach a certain point and need a break. Pillows are to have a soft and safe place to retreat to when students have those tough days or moments. Some students exhibit self-injurious behaviors when they reach a level of frustration and keeping them safe is a top priority!
