This project focuses on the use of board games to teach history and life skills in an 8th grade Social Studies class. The board games will be used as 15 minute activities over the course of a unit to supplement the curriculum standards. The students will be able to place themselves in the roles of great American heroes such as Washington, Green, Moultrie, Grant, Lee, Sherman, Tubman, and attempt to make decisions that impacted lives and nations. Board games, even at an elementary level, provide very intrinsic skills that are essential to young people. Skills that include teamwork, problem solving, cause/effect, debate, risk/reward analysis, developing relationships, and critical thinking. This project of board games will allow my students to learn and nurture these skills, while adding the element of history. Essential they are having fun, while learning Social Studies content, and skills used in the professional world.
