I am requesting class sets of culturally relevant texts to better engage my students which would help develop their reading skills and inspire them to become life long readers. My classroom is a diverse group of students, and reading novels that include characters reflecting their own background will enhance and deepen their understanding of core skills. Reading the novels as a community followed by rich discussion will allow my students to nurture their reading skills all while learning about shared experiences. The historical information of the texts will also give students context to important moments in United States and California history.
