Providing children the opportunity to collaborate and still maintain their own space is essential. While desks are great for some, and will always be an option, tables will encourage team work and organization. The tables can easily be rearranged for specific activities and supplies will become the responsibility of the group. Because of the dimensions of the tables, they can be combined and separated to make smaller or larger surfaces which will facilitate partner work that has become so important in our curriculum. I have found over the years shared responsibility increases the sense of community in my classroom. Many children arrive on the first day of school with massive amounts of school supplies while others have none. This often creates feelings of envy and possessiveness which inevitably end in arguments. I think tables and communal materials will help eliminate this disparity and will encourage sharing. Messy desks with supplies and crumpled papers sliding from them like lava to the floor will hopefully be eliminated as well. In so doing, there will be smoother transitions and fewer distractions from constantly trying to find materials or cleaning their desks. I have worked hard to create a classroom that allows children to choose how and where they can do their best learning. In addition to table seating, I have a variety of padded lap desks and foam and carpet squares for working around the room. There are clipboards for those who would prefer to use something smaller, and a large carpet for comfort. I truly believe that by adding tables to the mix I will have created a classroom where all children can find their comfort zone.
