All five and six year old kinders acquire language by interacting with their school friends and teachers. Our "maison" or house corner would provide real vocabulary for playing maman, papa, soeur, bébé, or it could be a restaurant where friends could come and order food from the kitchen. Having a durable and long lasting "play house" corner would provide my little ones with food and every day vocabulary to broaden their language. Providing a practical and fun learning environment for my kinders is what I love most about my job. For example, we connect the first letter of our foods to our alphabet. We learned the letter Ff a few weeks ago and connected it to fromage (cheese), fraise (strawberry), framboise (raspberry), and fourchette (fork). Plus, food is such a huge part of the French culture. If a visiting parent were to walk into my room and see the belle cuisine (the beautiful kitchen) and our children learning French while playing, they would most certainly say to themselves, this teacher gets it. She knows how to connect language as well as culture so her children will love what they are learning in school.
