I teach in a Title 1 school that is highly diverse. In looking at my classroom library, I realized most of my books featured caucasian characters which only reflects about 25% of my learners. The texts I have requested such as Buzz Beaker and Sofia Martinez reflect the diversity of the majority of my classroom. I want my students to learn a love for reading by giving them texts they connect with and relate to. In my classroom, we use a workshop model with daily independent reading time. The books will be used for whole class read alouds and then placed in our classroom library for the students to read as they choose. They will have access to these books during this independent reading time. It is my goal to improve reading stamina, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency with these texts that reflect my students. By donating to this project, you will be helping to provide students with texts that they can relate to. You will also be helping students to become better readers and improve their reading levels. Reading is the foundation for education and it is my hope that these diverse texts will help motivate my students to become more literate.
