My mission each year is not only to teach my students to read but for them to become life-long readers. I have learned that inspiring fifth grade students to read is NOT as impossible as a person might think. One aspect is key – the classroom’s culture. Classroom culture, which is directly created and encouraged by the classroom teacher, can make or break students’ reading success. Creating book trailers, book talks, and my class favorite book battles all lead to my book rich culture. I have found three things that, in my experience, greatly affect my classroom culture’s impact on reading success. They are teacher attitude, and a safe, book rich learning environment. The more students read, the better readers they become. My donors choose cart is filled with a wide variety of books. My hope is to give my students plenty of time for "self selected" reading time. With the help from donors choose, I will be able to expose my students to a variety of texts and authors, thus validating their reading choices. With your help we will see my students' interest and motivation to read increase. Hours and hours spent reading and the freedom to choose their own books will lead my students to discover a life long love of books and reading. This is an immeasurable gift my students will cherish forever.
