I decided to change things up in our media center this year. Since the students in our district are being assessed on non-fiction texts, I chose to pull the lower level non-fiction texts (K-2) and place them in their own section for the younger students to check out. I was surprised to find that our media center had only 216 non-fiction books for 395 students. Evidence supports that reading informational texts increases reading achievement in higher grades. Students who read and comprehend non-fiction text in the lower grades will have much better success in the higher, standardized test taking grades.
