Working with students who have extreme behaviors, challenges me to come up with innovative ways to teach my curriculum and core contents. Glow projects involve teaching a core subject while using UV/blacklights. My project will allow my students to delve in more readily to engaging and challenging materials. For example in writing, ALL students get excited by using UV pens to create secret messages or essays to be exposed only during GLOW time under UV flashlights. In reading, students can go through different stations for word work (solving in UV pens), matching vocabulary words (using UV tape on cards), or solving worksheets written in UV pen using UV flashlights. In math, students are motivated to try solving puzzles and word problems like detectives using only UV lights and UV flashlights to find and solve their work. For STEM, students could use UV tape to create puzzles, build structures, or make mazes. All projects can still be differentiated, but glow time allows a new, exciting element so students are more willing to try things they normally wouldn't. It fosters independence and encourages perseverance in tasks.
