Sixth grade students are often asked to read novels such as Tuck Everlasting by Natalee Babbit or Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson and while these books are amazing they are greatly missing out on diversity. The ability to build my library with books that represent characters and authors from many races, cultures, and backgrounds would enhance my students knowledge of the world around them and help them to truly feel connected to what they are reading. Walk through an urban classroom and ask the students: How many books have you read with African American characters? Likely, the answer will be small. My goal through this project is to collect some high interest books that are staples, such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but mostly to build a library with books as diverse as my students. The books I have selected also touch on subjects that are all to common but hard for students to face or understand like family dynamics and growing apart from friends. This project aims to help students learn about the world and cultures around them all while fostering a love of reading that just can't be accomplished in a censored and white washed library. Coming from a low income area many students are not able to supply themselves with creative school essentials such as colored pencils, glue, and scissors. These items will help to reach students who learn more creatively and allow others to learn to make connections through art rather than just putting words on paper.
