COVID-19 led to many days of virtual learning for students. While I am so thankful for the ability to continue learning/teaching while staying safe at home, I know that middle school aged students lost the concrete connection to mathematics. My project provides hands-on (concrete) resources for my middle school mathematics students. Students will use geometric solids and nets to gain an understanding of surface area and volume. Dice, dominoes, and cards will give students the ability to create their own experiments to learn about probability and statistics. Students will continue hands-on learning experiences by using colored pencils and highlighters to locate unknowns in equations and diagrams. This helps students identify what steps are needed to solve problems. Hands-on learning experiences bring mathematics to life. Using concrete manipulatives help students relate abstract concepts to real life. When students relate what they are learning to real life, it creates a deeper level of understanding as well as a desire to learn more. Please help me help my students grown mathematically.
