Diverse books that represent the students in my classroom will help them feel less alone and isolated. Books that have characters that look like they do and have some of the same background and experiences, support and enrich each students' academic experience. Seeing themselves reflected in literature validates each students' experience and gives them a framework for processing life events that can feel isolating. That isolation is felt more intensely now, during this difficult time of Covid, with it's quarantining, isolation, and online schooling. An inclusive classroom library will go a long way to making my students feel safe at school, which in turn, will help them to make academic progress.
