Our school is the only high school in an urban school district with 95% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. We have a rich athletic tradition; our goal is to improve academically. The recent focus has been to improve reading scores to increase the number of students who qualify to take college courses through concurrent enrollment. Not only does raising literacy rates improve both college acceptance and performance by increasing vocabulary and comprehension skills, it also provides students with a safe and productive hobby. Getting kids interested in reading can open doors that previously seemed closed, and the best way to get them interested and keep them interested is to supply them with books that they enjoy. Encouraging reading is difficult when the books or topics students are interested in are unavailable in their library. Recently, two members of our student book club shared their favorite book titles, and the library only had one copy of those mentioned, and it was the second book in a series--we don't own the first book. They were discouraged. Students are beginning to check out library books for classes, and they are asking for books either by name or by genre. They get excited, hoping the library will have what they are looking for. Unfortunately, I've had to say no to many of their requests. The books in this project are all student requests (two different series and some true crime books), and they will be available for checkout for reports, projects, and reading for fun.
