The benefits of flexible seating in the classroom are increased motivation, active engagement and improving core strength. I hope to implement unassigned flexible seating which is a drastic shift to a typical high school classroom. It will be a shift for staff and students in both structure and direct instruction. I believe that all students need to feel empowered about their learning and choice plays a crucial role in developing positive self-determination skills. Something I have realized, when serving students with a variety of emotional disabilities, is that "typical" classroom strategies are not always effective. Students who struggle to conform to the general education model often struggle to keep their emotions intact throughout their day. My hope is to explore differentiated seating when students are in my morning class and observe the impact it has on the rest of their school day.
