As the school counselor at my school, I want to provide 3rd-5th grade students an area in their homerooms to practice the different coping strategies that will bring them back to an emotional state of calm. In the classroom lessons I teach, and in my individual and small group sessions with students, we discuss big emotions and different coping skills they can use to handle them. Students often struggle with finding a private area to use these coping skills when the counseling office is unavailable. I want to provide that space for them in their homerooms so that they are able to rejoin their class and therefore miss less instruction time when they need a moment to cope with their emotions. The products I selected will make these calm down corners a comfortable spot for students to reset their day. The mats will provide a specific seating area reserved for those moments. The timers and sensory items will provide distraction and allow students to self-monitor how long they have been in the area. With the rings and velcro, I will create specific binders labeled with feeling words for students to express their emotions and explore different coping strategies, such as deep breathing exercises, that will help bring their brains and bodies back to a state of focus and mindfulness, In giving students these places within their classrooms, they can excel in their academic standards here at school and have better social interactions with their peers and teachers.
