In my first grade classroom, I prefer to think of myself as a guide to their learning; not the holder of the information they need to learn. I strive for students to gain independence and discover literacy and mathematical concepts by exploring content through play-based learning. My classroom is highly organized so students know where materials are and have easy access to them. Through this discovery in learning, students have more opportunities to grow socially, emotionally, and academically than they would with standard paper/pencil rote work.
