In fifth grade, the ability to decompose numbers and understand place value is crucial to meeting grade level standards. If students can understand numbers and concepts, they can calculate using any of the operations with ease. By having access to materials like base 10 blocks, they can have help with manipulating the numbers by having a visual to go along with their learning.
