Most middle schools have band and chorus but a string program like ours is very special. We serve students in every socio-economic level, taking them from the very beginning with no musical background. By the time they finish high school, many of our orchestra students are granted music scholarships for college. Our students who are using school owned instruments are now playing on dead strings giving them an inferior sound. This makes it difficult to get a good sound and to play as well as they possibly can. It will be more gratifying if they can hear good sounds so they and their audience will enjoy the beautiful music they are making. Many of our instruments and cases date back to the inception of the string program, over 50 years ago. The instruments are kept in good condition by a benevolent string repair technician, but many of the cases are just worn out. They don't protect the instruments well from damage or weather. New cases will enable students to safely take their instruments home to practice each day. This will allow them to excel at playing. Funding this project will help a lot of our students excel and feel very good about their accomplishments.
