Last year we dealt with many challenges such as social distancing, wearing masks, and remote learning. It was hard, but what bothered me the most was all of that screen time! The shift towards more technology in education has become a massive push since Covid. I love what I can accomplish with my students through digital learning and a class set of iPads, but I can't ignore all of the research that supports that children learn best through play and hands-on experiences. My students deserve to learn in the best way! I know that as English language learners from lower-income families, my students have a significant and well-documented gap in achievement. I firmly believe that providing my students with hands-on and play-based learning opportunities is a powerful stride toward closing the gap. I will use the magnetic tiles, marble run, play sticks, brain flakes, and magnetic building sticks as STEM activities. I can create challenges that will require them to use the materials to solve. They can use their iPads to record and explain how they solved it. They can also take pictures and challenge their peers to match their engineering skills. I will use the Dino-Sorters math activity, rainbow CVC objects, Play-Doh, alphabet dough stampers, alphabet rubber stamps, wooden pattern block puzzles, piggy math balance, ladybug letters, and number and alphabet beanbags for hand-on learning during math and literacy stations. I can develop games and structure activities all year to incorporate the requested tools and allow my students to optimize their learning and retain their knowledge. Educators always say we learn to read, and then we read to learn. While that is true, it's also true that we learn to play, and then we play to learn!
