Let's face it; we are a technology society. It is all around us. From programing your DVR to signing in at a doctor's office; WE USE IT EVERYDAY! Some home are overflowing with technology. In a family of 4, their might be 4 laptops, 2 printers, a 3d printer, iPhones, Apple TV, iPads and many things I might not even be familiar with yet. Yes, kids see these items as FUN and they might not even realize the educational impact that it has on their lives. For example, when my own son asks me a question, sometimes I say to him, "Go look it up". So he takes out his iPad and Googles the question he just asked me, and just like that, he just learned something! Unfortunately, for my many of my students, this is not the case. I teach in a school where over 70% of the students qualify for "Free & Reduced Lunch". Their parents are concerned with keeping the lights on and putting a meal on the table and not with supplying their kids with an iPad or computer. Many of these students also come from uneducated families. Learning isn't the same for them as it is for my son. But, in my classroom, it should be! PUTTING AN IPAD IN THE HANDS OF A CHILD OPENS UP A NEW WORLD FOR THEM. Besides being able to reinforce the concepts that they learn, it gives a student a tool to navigate their learning. They are able to explore new ideas, dive deeper into what they have learned, read a book or even listen to a story if they are unable to read. Students be able to get the answers to questions in school that they might not be able to get in their own homes!!!
