I currently teach first grade in a rural area of Wisconsin. My students come to school excited to learn and I am certainly excited to teach. I have taught in my district for 8 years now and year after year I see the same issues arise: Many students struggle with learning letter-sound relationships, segmenting, blending, reading, and writing. I have done a lot to work in the past few years to research why this is happening and what can be done about it. Working in a small school district though, we lack many of the resources found in larger districts. Our district needs more tools to help reach all of our students and give them the skills they need to become proficient readers.
