For many students, science terminology is like a second language and to complicate matters most of the molecules and processes are too small to see. Frustration abounds as they try to grasp the complicated processes going on inside the cell. Students can manipulate model kits to visualize the terminology and steps involved in difficult scientific processes. These particular kits, low of Genetic Information Kits and Bioinformatics Map of the Human Beta-Globin Gene Set, allow students to model both transcription and translation; the processes involved in decoding the information stored in DNA to create the multitude of proteins required by our bodies. Students will be able to rotate through stations to see, touch, and manipulate the models through each step of the process. All students will benefit from the various activities within the kit, but I believe it will be critical in aiding my students with learning disabilities who especially struggle with abstract ideas.
