As the chair of a large suburban high school’s English Department, I am responsible for developing and coordinating our First of the Year Experience, a reading program offering students a selection of books focused upon the shared theme of economic hardships. Within the last year, our school has moved from being categorized by NCLB as “unsatisfactory” to “average.” Serving approximately 2,000 students we are a “9-grain” high school, serving the needs of numerous economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition to having three feeder schools, we also welcome students from across our large district through NCLB inter-district transfer.
