Our school is located in an older, un-renovated building. All floors are tiled. Without a rug, there is no comfortable space for us to meet as a class, or for students to read quietly together. Having a comfortable space to sit and meet daily as a group is critical to the creation of a caring, classroom community. In terms of supplies, classrooms at our school come with desks and chairs. Each teacher also receives a small supply budget. While helpful and appreciated, this does not begin to cover costs of setting up a classroom, especially for a new teacher. I have been lucky that friends have donated books they are no longer using to help start a class library. This is particularly important since due to budget issues, there is no school library. I have purchased paper, pencils, markers, glue, scissors, games, and other supplies necessary to create a rich learning environment. The other key item our classroom really needs to help support student learning is a rug. I hope you will consider funding this project!
