Becoming attached to a character as if they know them, feeling emotions with their hearts, and relating to circumstances- that’s what I see in my kids when we read The Outsiders! My students are surprised S.E Hinton wrote the title when she was just a little over their age! Knowing this fact helps them see themselves as authors. The end and favorite part of my school year is hearing kids say, “The book was better!” The addition of Wishtree and Mockingbird to our reading circles would greatly impact their reading experience and get them out of their small corner of the world. I tell my reluctant readers that reading is cheap travel--it gets us someplace new when we have to stay where we are.
