I hold the strong belief that education should include the whole child. Too often school is son strictly academic that other areas of development can be overlooked to make time for preacademic work. One area I would like to be better able to support is physical development. While we have a good amount of outside play time at school I see children looking for more ways to express themselves and learn in physical ways. Young children are drawn to learning through movement and I would like my classroom environment to reflect a range of opportunities for just that. Physical development is crucial to children’s learning and growing and with less time for children to enjoy the freedom of outdoor play at home (due to many factors including but not limited to: busy working parents, increase fear of outside dangers, increase in screentime, adult scheduled extracurricular activities) I believe that it is imperative that school provide a space to move! I believe that all student deserve a space to exert their power, especially those whose extra energy can often be labeled as “distracting” or “excessive” at school. By teaching children, beginning at a young age, how to listen to and respond to their body’s cues I hope to instill a life long love of exersize and health as well as acceptance for differences. My preschool classroom is a busy place and while we have daily outdoor play time many students crave more movement throughout their day. I believe that having a designated area in the classroom for just that would benefit all of the students and would be life changing for others. Thank you for considering this project.
