My school is working really hard to continue implementing a wellness policy that offers children healthy choices for lunch and encourages a lot of physical activity throughout the day. After learning all about plants during one of our science units, my students expressed how much they would love to have a garden at school. We researched the tools and supplies we would need to create a garden behind our classroom. Our kids need engaging ways to learn about the health benefits of eating healthy and moving. By giving our kids the tools to set up, tend, and harvest a vegetable garden, they will be learning many academic standards along with how to grow their own healthy food. My goal is for my students to grow and harvest food throughout the school year and culminate the year with a "farm to fork" event for their parents during Open House. My hope is that this project instills the importance of nutrition in my students and that it will impact them for the rest of their lives.
