This is my 1st grade's team second year of team teaching. Last year was a learning experience! I team teach with one other teacher and I teach math and science. I had a hard time finding storage for 44 science and math books, 44 science and math journals, library books, pencil boxes and folders! Chair pockets will make a world of difference in giving my homeroom students their own space for their items and in turn my 2nd class the desk storage for theirs.
Our district is low in math, and what better way to get these students where they need to be than using hands on activities! Teachers cannot afford to buy a lot of centers, games, and manipulatives that the district will not provide. Pattern blocks and cards are a great way to get those little minds to think outside the box. Using pattern blocks to create objects helps students to recognize the attributes of geometric shapes. Place value coins are a recent way to teach place value. Not all children learn the same way, and using place value coins is an alternative way to teach this concept to help struggling students. Ten frame dice are a great way to help students subitize or recognize the number of objects in a group quickly. Struggling students can use this in intervention and all students can use these to practice. The Visualize Write and Wipe math cards will be used for intervention with struggling students, as well as extra practice for all the students.
There are so many great ideas and learning opportunities out there and my students should not be deprived! Please consider my requests and make a class full of 1st graders very happy! Oh, and their teacher too!
