I am requesting new seating options for my students with exceptionalities. These furniture pieces will improve our classroom by giving students an outlet for their energy and aid them in focusing during crucial moments of their day. Because the Hokki stools and balance cushions are rounded and made to securely wobble, they allow students safe ways to wiggle and move while working and increasing their focus on their work. These great seating options will also help students to build up their muscles in their core while balancing. Each of the seating options can be used in a variety of places within our room including on the rug, at their own seats, and at our small group table. Since our classroom structure already allows for large group work and various small group work areas, these pieces will blend right in and be used multiple times each day. Also, their portability will allow us to use them in a variety of settings throughout the school based on each student's need. Additionally, students themselves will learn to use these furniture pieces to meet their own needs. Learning to recognize their needs as a learner will benefit their self confidence and their level of independence. Research studies have shown that providing seating alternatives like the stools and cushions requested can improve engagement and motivation, as well as improve posture, burn calories, and increase oxygen flow to the brain. Improvements in behavior have even been noted when physical activity is increased the way it is with seating options such as these. My students give their all each day working through the struggles of their disabilities and their environmental issues like significant poverty. Therefore, your support of this project will help improve every learning opportunity for students with the highest of needs.
