So many times Science and Social Studies are overlooked in first grade. We concentrate so much on learning to read and master simple addition and subtraction facts we forget our students need to discover the worlds of science and social studies. As we all know, much emphasis is given to "the test" in third grade. However, in upper grades, knowledge of science and social studies are also tested. We are setting our children up for failure if we wait until they are older to teach them about the Wright Brothers, Benjamin Franklin, Mt. Rushmore, the life cycle of a butterfly, the water cycle, etc. Why not give them a taste of this wonderful world they will dive into a little deeper when they are older?
