My students, though diverse in their levels of financial stability, do not have many opportunities to see the world outside of our small town. The two novels I've chosen will not only allow students to explore people from other backgrounds and cultures, but also consider globally relevant issues such as prejudice, racism, grief, and friendship despite differences. Sometimes the difference between a successful student, and a apathetic one, is a good book. For our classroom and school year, I would like to implore donors to help me buy a classroom set of "American Born Chinese" by Gene Luen Yang and "I Am Princess X" by Cherie Priest. These two novels engage all students, not only because of the lure of their themes, but because they are partially written in graphic novel form. This enables lower level readers, who I teach a high number of, to comprehend, discuss, analyze, and engage with the story lines at a level equitable to that of their peers. As a struggling reader, the ability to take part in grade level material as an equal is a huge boost to their confidence, as well as their grade! Children, even those in middle school, want to learn; they don't often enjoy sticking out like a sore thumb. Using graphic novels - that are intended for middle and high school students - helps all students build critical literary skills necessary for lifelong reading.
