Our class reading center is set up as a campground to be a comfortable and inviting place for students to read. The class set of books, Wonder, will be used to begin the school year. The theme of the book is to be kind. The use of this book is a fantastic way to set the tone for how all students should treat each other. Additionally, the novel encompasses every reading standard that is targeted in fifth grade for the FSA (state mandated assessment). The use of the novel, Wonder to begin the school year and set the tone for our class will be further enhanced with the use of the other two novels requested. The other novels are two of the novels we read each year in fifth grade. Freak the Mighty teaches students about friendship and how we are all different and unique. The Devil's Arithmetic introduces our study of the Holocaust. The need for these two titles is to replace well loved copies from years prior.
