Flexible classrooms give students a choice in what kind of learning space works best for them, and help them to work collaboratively, communicate, and engage in critical thinking. I want to transform my classroom into a student-centered learning space. I use a Reading and Writing Workshop model in my classroom and it provides a lot of independent work time. During this time, my students are given a choice of where they want to work independently. They love to lay on the floor, under desks, behind tables and right in middle of the classroom. By giving my students more choices for comfortable seating, I am hoping to see an increase in motivation and engagement with the content. In my many years of teaching, since I have allowed students to lay on the ground, their achievement and motivation has increased. I want to create a classroom "Starbucks". My plan is to give my students various choices for seating. I have already pulled in a futon, and arranaged my remaining desks in groups to promote collaboration. However, most students learn in multiple ways and I want to be able to provide alternate learning areas. Yoga mats will allow students to lay on the floor comfortably while using a clipboard for written work. Bungee chairs, bean bags and stools will give alternative seating options to those students who love to sit but don't like traditional classroom chairs.
