The materials I'm seeking will begin to transform our library into a place where students can comfortably work, learn, collaborate and immerse themselves in a great book.
My goal for the library is to remove much of the traditional seating - tables and chairs - and replace them with new and varied options that better meet student's needs. By giving students the flexibility to form their own small groups - with bean bag chairs or floor cushions for example, they have the chance to collaborate in ways that traditional seating makes difficult. They can also explore their own needs when it comes to learning environments. Do they work better at a table or on the floor? Do they sit better in a chair or on a wobble stool? Would they prefer to be with a group or on their own in a quiet corner? By offering multiple seating and working options, students are given the chance to learn about themselves while they learn the subject material.
21st century students need to be able to think outside the box and work successfully with their peers. They need a space where they can spend time, alone or in groups, thinking, studying, reading and creating. Studies have shown that the physical environment in an educational setting greatly impacts student outcomes. A library should be a place where collaboration is supported. A library should be a place where all types of learners are honored and their needs are met.
