Hickory Tavern is a Title one school located in Laurens District 55. A majority of our students come from low income families and do not have access to STEM based learning activities at home. I want to provide exciting and engaging activities for my students throughout the day, but particularly when they arrive to school in the mornings. If they build it, they will learn! STEM activities challenge not only a student's mind, but it captures their curiosity and makes learning fun. When students are engaged in divergent thinking, they learn that there are multiple ways to solve a problem. Studies have shown that students who spend more time in free-play with blocks or puzzles score higher on tests! There is also evidence that shows that children who who play with these types of materials have an increase in language development, problem-solving skills, and cooperation. With this STEM project complete, I will be able to provide my students with 20 STEM activities for our morning work time that will last throughout the entire school year!
